Iran’s Burnt City received its name from being burnt down three times in its history. Archeologists hope to uncover evidence showing that, on those occasions, the city’s inhabitants moved to Taleb Kahn mound, here the world’s oldest backgammon set was found.
Located near the city of Zabol, in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan, the Burnt City is considered Iran’s largest prehistoric site. Though not rebuilt after being burnt down for the third time, the city was inhabited by four different civilizations.
Taleb Khan mound was probably inhabited during the second civilization stage of the city. In the mound, archeologists found remains of three children and prehistoric vessels from the second millennium BC. They also found remains of a 7-year-old girl.
Other findings at the site include the world’s oldest dice and animated picture, the earliest known caraway seed and artificial eyeball.
