Google Game Center is an online venue for free multiplayer games. Recently launched, it can be added to personalized iGoogle pages, websites or blogs. It is the first and only portal offering complete multiplayer games that can be played directly through the iGoogle homepage.
"Those games were originally built for my own small portal and weren't used by many people,” explained creator Arty Sandler. “When iGoogle was announced, I thought that it would be a very cool idea to integrate my game engine. It took about three weeks to turn the idea into reality," he said.
Besides backgammon, the portal contains a varied offering of games, including checkers, chess, Battleship, Go, Renju, Reversi, Kalah, Halma, Hex and many more. A software engineer and Web developer, Sandler especially enjoys creating online versions of ‘real’ board and card games.
Users can play the games or watch others play. For easier access, games are developed using HTML and Javascript. Sandler wants to share community spirit, allowing for game developers for pocket devices to connect to the Center and for users to suggest what games to include.
