Backgammon bar says goodbye
Farewell to Sydney
Baron’s, an iconic bar in Sydney, closed its doors on Wednesday October 31st. Its manager and loyal customers will miss it. "There's four million people in Sydney and I reckon every one of them's been here at least once," manager Lindsay Doubleday, now 74, said.

Established 28 years ago, the bar will be demolished soon. A four-storey building will take its spot. The new building will include offices, a restaurant and a bar. Still, in Doubleday’s words, "others will try to imitate it but they won't be able to… you can’t create a place like this, it has to grow.”

Many will miss the backgammon tables, jukebox and Chesterfield sofas, all of which have witnessed a variety of stories. "People come here not to be seen but to enjoy themselves - from barristers, doctors and politicians to celebrities, chefs and right down to backpackers," said Doubleday.

Before she was famous, Nicole Kidman drank at Baron’s. Also Bono enjoyed its relaxed ambience. "The thing that makes an establishment is the ambience of the place and that comes from the people, the attitude of staff and just the feeling of the place," conclude Doubleday.
