The game is an important part of daily life in Banda, Uganda.
Four hours from the city of Kampala, capital of Uganda, is the Banda Island. In 1999, the island opened its doors to tourists, now featuring a small lodge and a restaurant.
“We spend half the day eating and the other half talking about what to eat next!,” the lodge’s website explains. Aside from eating, drinking and sleeping, the main two activities are reading at the bar and playing backgammon.
“There are two [backgammon] boards cut into concrete tables on the beach and often several games are played in one sitting,” explains Sam Wilson, who visited the island.
Wilson also said that ordinary rules are not taken into account. In Banda, you don’t play by the rules, “you play by ‘Dom’s rules,” a variation some of them consider best.
If you are thinking about vacations that include lots of free time, relaxing and playing backgammon, Banda Island might be a good choice to consider.
