Thirty-three years ago, Casa Aries, a leather store owned by Domingo Perez Arisiti, presented a novel line: leather backgammon sets that were sold to several European fashion firms. The idea of this product came from a party thrown by Onassis and his wife Jackie Kennedy, in which they surprised guests with several boards of this ancient game.
In fact, the famous couple put the game on the spot again and Casa Aries started selling more than 1,000 backgammon sets a day to companies such as Christian Dior, Nina Ricci and Hermès. The company reached the impressive number of 14 stores, including one in Paris and one in Tokio.
Thanks to backgammon, Casa Aries signed contracts with important fashion firms and its profits increased year after year. “The know who is certainly more important than the know how,” Perez Arisiti says when he remembers those times. The leather store became a group of trademarks and business continued growing until the financial crisis in 1994.
Nowadays, Perez Arisiti is an important businessman who promotes commerce in Mexico and he is organizing the country’s International Fashion Forum. However, he still remembers that it all started with a small, leather backgammon set.
