The 2007 edition of the Backgammon World Championship has already crowned the new best backgammon player in the world. After a tight match, Jorge Pan, from Argentina, defeated Brazilian player Alvaro Savio to become this year’s winner.
The match went on for almost 4 hours and the final score was 26-23. During the final backgammon game, attendants witnessed an amazing situation. The score was 3 away in favor of Savio and he cubed and then gave Pan the cube. The Argentinean player re-cubed to 4 and created a Double Match Point.
Later in the game, Savio rolled a 6-3, quite a problematic roll to play. However, while moving the checkers back and forth thinking about his next move, he changed the dice to 5-3. Pan did not become aware of it and the game continued since the referee cannot speak unless he is requested to by a player.
Despite the Brazilian player’s maneuver, Pan made a risky move by choosing to break his 6-point in an attempt to make a hit and managed to recover. The Argentinean finally defeated Savio and deservedly became the best backgammon player of the year.
