The backgammon game is nearly 5000 years old, so, its specifications have varied through the years.
In the beginning, the game was played in a board and instead of plastic chips, players used beans or stones.
The boards can be made of several materials like wood, plastic, ivory or metal. However, the most common are the wooden or plastic boards.
The backgammon board is a square shaped surface. It has 24 alternated-in-color triangles printed on its surface, 12 on one edge and 12 in the opposite edge. The 2 groups of triangles are in front of each player.
The board is divided in 4 quadrants, with 6 triangles in each one. Those quadrants are called "player's home board and outer board" and "opponent's home board and outer board"
In addition, the home boards are separated from the outer boards by the "bar", which is the place where the chips rest until they are moved back to the game.
On one side of the board is a deposit to put the chips that are bare off the game in the final stage.
